Curls, Pleats, & Changing Seasons

I got a perm this morning. Why did I, someone with natural curls, get a perm? I have very inconsistent, fussy curls, so I only had some of my hair loosely permed to even out the texture some. In these pictures, it’s in its poofy, post treatment, wind-blown, frizzy state. I’m really excited to wash it two days from now and see the curls with a little more definition and less frizz…and push those bangs off my face. I just hope the curls still look alright when my hair gets longer – my stylist said it should grow out nicely, and maybe even look better when a bit longer. My goal is to get my hair pretty long again, so hopefully she’s right.

I really like this color combination. I was inspired by this outfit, from the blog M Loves M (though I went with an eggplant color rather than maroon). I’ve been browsing my style Pinterest board a lot lately – the transitional period between seasons always puts me in a bit of a rut because I’m still refreshing my memory of the warmer weather clothes I’ve had packed up, and I’m pretty sick of my winter clothes. Today was nearly 90˚F, though, so I think it’s about time to say goodbye to the more wintery items. Haha, the jump from cold weather to warm was so quick, I still walk outside expecting to need a coat.

See other ways I’ve styled this skirt here and here, and see how I’ve styled this cardigan and belt in another outfit here.

What’s Up? (Belated) March Edition

Since I didn’t post Monday, you get a double dose of me today! Plus, I realized I never shared my March Instagram highlights and what I’ve been up to.

ON INSTAGRAM: (follow me @maggarama)

March-Instagram

  1. Working on website design/development!
  2. My sister and I went to the park during her spring break. We had to wait a looong time before the swings were free. All the kiddies in town were at the park that unusually warm day.
  3. I got accepted to the University or Oregon Interior Architecture graduate program! It’s not likely to happen though, because I’m not having much luck getting an assistantship.
  4. I go to yard sales with my mom every Saturday morning. We’re normally up before the sun. It’s totally worth it, though, because I’ve found some pretty awesome stuff.
  5. My St. Patrick’s day outfit! I went with a subtle green.
  6. I love miso soup! I’ve eaten a lot of it lately.
  7. Some goodies – Blog Inc., white out, and my favorite pens.
  8. I have a lot of hats. I need to wear them more often!
  9. No, I didn’t murdur a purple-blooded creature. I was cutting up beets to roast for dinner. Yum!

WATCHING: Duck Dynasty…um, yeah. And DOCTOR WHO! Of course.

LUSTING: high waisted skinny jeans, overalls, long hair, a simple b&w striped short sleeve tee, summery moccasins, this (yum), a Cherner chair, She & Him show, and outdoor adventures…always.

The Secondhand Shopaholic’s Shopping Guide: TAGS (California)

This week’s shopping guide interview is with Tanya, owner of TAGS in Oakdale, California! TAGS has everything from basic wardrobe staples to totally eclectic pieces. They also carry home goods….it sounds like they have pretty much anything you could fathom – fun! In addition to the below interview, Tanya also shared some videos from the store’s earlier days. They’ve come a long way since then, Tanya laughs. Here is a news video from 2010 and another video of goings on at the store from 2011.

1. Tell us a bit about you. Fun fact?

Since I can’t come up with a fun fact… How about a secret… I have always wanted to give acting a try! Or guilty pleasure: Can’t stop reading on my smart phone.

2. Why did you decide to start a consignment store?

VALUE!! Consignment works harder for the community, stretches your money, is green living at its best!! I was working long hours for other companies…and thought it was time to work for me. It will be 7 years October 2013.

3. What’s the best part about your job?

Putting the value back into underloved items!! The treasure hunt everyday! The community apsect of the job. There is a shared responsibility between the consignors and TAGS. It creates a comraderie that doesn’t always exsist in other businesses. Since unsold items go directly to local charities, there is an added layer of what our business and consignors bring to the community.

4. What types and/or brands of things could a shopper find in your store?

TAGS is a brilliant to basics store!! That means we have an eclectic blend of merchandise…from coveted premier brands, to the best of the basics…we usually have it! If not, simply put it on the wish list that we have…and YES…we will call you.

Not only do we carry the brands that people love to find! We also have been known for some other things… spurs, stuffed pheasant, bar stools, rugs, chandliers, garden supplies, and more. Often times we tell consignors, if you don’t know just bring it in…WE LOVE to LOOK!

5. To give readers a better idea of what great things they can find, what is one (or some) of your favorite pieces in your store right now?

A set of yellow polka dot lawn chairs (vintage), Lucky NWT satchel, A carpet bag, True Religion Jeans, mens Chanel cologne, FAB!! pole dancing exercise dvd LOL!! Vintage fabric wallet…great!!

6. What is one thing that sets your store apart from the rest/makes it unique?

MENS – Yes We have a great mens selection – shoes, suspenders, premium denim, favorite T’s and more!

7. What’s the best part about being in the location (city/state) your store is in?

Oakdale, CA is a great community to serve! They have embraced green living and have embraced TAGS with open arms. Oakdale is also a gateway community to the beautiful sierra nevada foothills and Yosemite.

8. Quick! You have one minute to convince someone why they should start shopping secondhand…go!

Love buying local? Want to save money, your time and the environment? Want real value with real service? Then start shopping second-hand!! When you buy second-hand…especially consignment, you HELP your neighbors, your community, and the environment.

9. Do you have a website, Facebook page, Twitter, or blog where readers can learn more or stay informed about events, sales, etc.?

10. Any last comments?

I LOVE that we are a new store every 60 days!
We are so busy that we put merchandise out on the floor every hour!!

Thanks Tanya!

If you’d like to offer some input on locations (cities/states) I should cover in the future or if you are a resale store owner and would like your shop featured, please let me know in the comments.

Olive, Pink, and Dog Models

Trains are a nice way to travel. I can just relax, read, take pictures of the sun rising…but they’re also a great way to get sick. Yup, I caught something. Luckily it didn’t kick in until my last day in Northern Virginia, so I was still able to enjoy my trip. I got to hang out with the cute doggies in these pictures, see my even cuter one-year-old cousin, have lunch with a good friend that I haven’t seen since last fall, have a nice lunch with my grandparents, see my grandma’s art show, sit in Cherry Blossom Festival traffic for an hour (the trees weren’t really in bloom yet, bummer), check out the Torpedo Factory Art Center, catch up on some reading, and watch way too much TV. Sigh…now I have to get back to work.

I wanted to bring as little luggage as possible on my trip, so I packed items that could all be mixed and matched. Pink and olive, a combination I love, was pretty much the theme of my weekend. Below are two outfits that show two different ways to wear this lovely color combo. Both feature the same shoes and the same scarf. Also check out this outfit which features a similar color palette.

Weekend Links!

Happy early weekend! I’m off on an adventure via train. I’m dog-sitting for relatives this weekend, and I’m not bringing a computer with me (it’s kinda hard to travel with a 27″ iMac). I’ll try to post when I get home on Monday night, but if not, I’ll be back Tuesday. I think I’m going to just take advantage of my time without my computer to catch up on some long overdue reading. I was planning on getting out and exploring some while away, but I think I’d rather just relax, read, and hang out with the dogs. I may go out one day, or perhaps meet up with a friend in the area, but that’s it. So here are some links to get you through the weekend:

This photo inspired me to whip out my orange nail polish. It already looks terrible – the woes of an artist.

Mmmm, these cheese puffs sound yummy and super easy to make!

I’m loving all the overalls I’m seeing in lookbooks and on Pinterest lately! A nod to my childhood. Now just to find the perfect pair and style them in a way that doesn’t make me look like my childhood.

Speaking of lookbooks, Ruche’s most recent is adorable! I love the tea party theme.

One of the big trends this spring is globally influenced apparel and accessories. Think mud cloth, Scandinavian embroidery, raffia, ikat, etc. I love it!
